As an architect, I have always been interested in using natural
and renewable resources for building products. My first contact
with bamboo was on a field visit to Nicaragua and Costa Rica for
a project of Architects without Borders – Belgium. After
working as an architect in Belgium and abroad for some years, I
started an MSc in Urban Environmental Management (UEM) at
Wageningen University (The Netherlands), with a focus on
Sustainable Building.
My own fascination for bamboo and the
feeling that it is currently highly underappreciated as a
construction material, lead me to do my MSc thesis on 'the role
of bamboo in global modernity'. The idea was to get a better
insight in the barriers and opportunities for the greater
development and use of guadua-bamboo for construction products.
My fieldwork in the Coffee Region of Colombia focussed for a
great part on the recent developments of innovative
guadua-bamboo products in the region.
Currently, I continue
working for the Department of UEM at Wageningen University on
topics of Sustainable Building and Materials.
