Beyond Sustainable Development: 
Education for Gross National Happiness in Bhutan
Since 1961, the Kingdom of Buthan has designed its own unique path for development with impressive results: the main objective of Gross National Happiness (GNH) holds priority over Gross National Product (GNP), or economic growth. However, the influence of western economic and cultural models, especially through mass education and media, fuels a gap between GNH goals and people's expectations. The study provides insights for those who question mainstream, consumption-based development approaches and strive for creative, sustainable alternatives.
