EMISSIONIZERO
dedicates this concrete, techno-scientific contribution,
to all victims of the seismic disasters and the
Tsunamis of the remote and recent past believing
that only knowledge and respect
for Nature can guarantee to the
Inhabitants of the Earth a future in which
natural phenomena will not become calamities

Forewords
The
diffusion of the use of bamboo in building depends on
the quality of the raw material which is obtained by
sustainable cultivation, preservation and drying
techniques, but also on the feasibility of a mass production of low costs houses to satisfy the desperate
housing demand worldwide and in particular in the so
called developing countries.
The
design of appropriate and energetically efficient
prefabricated bamboo structures, needs the forecast of
the behaviour of the structural components according to
the performances required by the project's loads.
Such performances depend of course on the mechanical
features of the bamboo species used for the construction
and on the behaviour of the joints transferring the
loads from one component to another and finally to the
ground.
The
forecast of the static behaviour of different types of
structural joints implies the development of calculation
models providing information regarding both the overall
response the various loads and the role played by every
single micro-component of the joint in determining that
particular response.
Such models must be validated experimentally by testing
real scale joints samples.
EMISSIONIZERO
promotes and coordinates a research program in
collaboration with Eng. Mario de Miranda (Studio de Miranda
e Associati - Milan, Italy) and Prof. Gianni Bartoli
(Faculty of Engineering - University of Florence, Italy)

The
purpose of the research is the elaboration of simplified forecasting
models of the static performances of the main types of joints in
given conditions of work and environment, and the use of bamboo
elements of those species revealing the physical and mechanical
features appropriate to building use.
The final output of our research program will be a MANUAL for the
architectural design of bamboo structures, appropriate to both
local socio-economical and the local techno-productive conditions.

Methodology
preliminary
notes on the phases of our research:
1st phase: recognition of the state of the art of the
use in building and of the physical
and mechanical features of the bamboo species Guadua Angustifolia, Dendrocalamus Asper (and
others)
2nd phase: testing of various types of joints made
with different bamboo species, to determine their static
behaviour by under different kinds of loads (compression parallel to
the grain, compression normal to the grain, tension parallel to grain,
cut, shear, etc)
The analysis will test the joints up to their ultimate loads, assessing
the maximum admittable load and related deformations but also the
roles of the single components in the overall behaviour of the
structural joint.
3rd phase: elaboration of simplified calculation models based
on the experimental data collected. Given the physical
and mechanical features of the bamboo species used, the structural
design hypothesized, the type of joint amongst the structural
subsystems and the type of strenghts to be transferred, the
calculation models will make possible to create/design
bamboo joints appropriate
to their purposes.
4th phase: editing of a TEXT on bamboo
constructions, mainly technical but written in a friendly style,
accessable to designers who have no particular technical competence.
For the subject and the geographical areas of higher applicability
of bamboo contructions, the text will be translated and published
also in English
language.
The
Authors and the eventual co-authors will respect secrecy regarding
the contents and findings until the delivery of publication.

Who
is participating
According to the aim of the research, the enrollment of a number of
Research Institutions (Italian and foreigner) is mostly welcome.
Participation
to the research is made possible basically at two levels and their
related conditions:
a. The
Research Body shares with our research team: data,
case histories or
any other kind of relevant report or contribution, which is found
and/or edited autonomously ad hoc but is coherent with the aim, the
subject and the style of the research here described.
b.
The Research Body can carry out, at its own laboratories, parts of
the testings of our common research program (ultimate load testings
of joints already inserted as part of the program or insertable in
the program)
In both cases these parts of the program will be carried out in
strict collaboration with the Research Core Team in full respect of
the protocol, in order to allow the comparability of the
experimental data.
In
particular, in the second phase of the research, when the setting of
the testing machineries, a protocol of the different types of
testings and of the junction types to be tested will be defined, so
that the outcomes of the various tests are omogeneous and therefore
comparable.
