The
Travelling Pictures Exhibition closed in Racconigi (Cuneo -
Italy) has stopped off in Torino.
We
have asked to Nuccia Maritano Comoglio,
professor at the Politecnico of Torino who has promoted
the third edition at the II Faculty of Architecture where
she teaches, to comment the meaning of this initiative:
<<
Bamboo is largely used in the so called developing countries. Its
widespread and sustainable production makes it an amazingly
interesting material for these countries. On the other hand,
the technical and scientific knowledge on bamboo's structural
behaviour and durability are still very young.
The
planning effort required for the developing countries habitat is
inversely proportional to the economic resources available. When
resources are limited, a lot of research and a lot of design are
needed.
Studies
carried out at the Post Graduate School in “Technology,
Architecture and Town in the developing countries” of the
Politecnico of Torino have indentified a research field
in the technological hybridization joining local and simple
materials/technologies (having a low technological content) with
advances or even extremely advanced technologies used in small
quantity and/or in the form of advances knowledge (calculation,
real time controls with even extremely advanced equipments) in
order to achieve a new generation of innovative and highly
performing materials/technologies.
Researching
on bamboo in order to optimize its uses, implies the adoption of
this methodological approach. As a matter of fact bamboo is a
local low cost material, suitable to hybridation with even highly
sophisticated junctions at the designing level but easily put in
place and, where needed, much advanced calculation and control
methods.
This
explains the interest in hosting at our Faculty of Architecture
the Pictures Exhibition GROWING BAMBOO TO HARVEST
HOUSES - pictures of bamboo architectures from the world,
promoted and organized by the EMISSIONIZERO Association, which is
as of today the point of reference in Italy for its knowledge on
bamboo achieved through the building and training experience of
the Vergiate Pavilion, its participation to international meetings
and its wide documentation so far gathered. >>
